以上笼统谈了如何写好英语作文的几个方面，那么，大学生平时应如何准备英语写作呢？一、学好《大学英语》，狠抓语言基本功提高写作水平并非一朝一夕能够奏效，同学们应着眼于平时。《大学英语·精读》教材1—4册选文无论从语言表达还是布局谋篇都是典范，同学们可以从中借鉴。
如套用第二册unit 2一课“Were it left to me to decide whether I should.”的句型来表达两者选择顿觉笔锋迥劲雄浑；引用林肯的名句“You can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time,but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.”来论证诚实的重要性很有说服力。精读课中学到的不应仅是几个单词而已。
二、研读范文，学会模仿范文往往用精炼、地道的语言写成。模仿范文写作是成功的第一步。
有现成可以套用的句、段、篇，何苦还要拈断胡须再去写因思维负向迁移而导致的大量Chinglish（中国式英语）呢？《精读》第三册unit 3“Why I Teach”一文，作者通过一设问引出话题以反面论证，欲扬先抑，然后用“Why,then,do I teach”一句引到正面立论，接着用五个排比段落“I teach because”来阐述原因，层层递进，最后得出“Teaching gives me peace,and variety,and chellenge,and the opportunity to keep on learning.”的结论。如此结构严谨的范文，实在是我们写议论文时模仿的不可多得的佳作。
