英大第一次看到这个词组：steal my thunder时，也是一头雾水， steal是偷的意思，thunder则表示雷电，所以它的意思难道是：偷了我的雷电？

其实呢，这个词组最初来自于文艺圈。 1704年，还不太出名的剧作家John Dennis发表了新作 Appius and Virginia ，并在伦敦剧院上演。
他为该剧创造出特别的雷声。但后来这种雷声制造方法被其他人抄袭过去，但他的剧作依旧无人问津。
后来，人们就用steal one's thunder指剽窃某人尚未发表的想法观点或发明创造，居他人之功，或抢风头。

spotlight是聚光灯, 舞台上的聚光灯时常对准了大明星, 因为他是重要人物, 但是有时候一个配角却会硬挤到中心位置来, 想把观众的注意力从主角转移到自己身上来。我们就说他steal the spotlight（抢风头）。
