逆翻译后的几点补充说明：
（1）关于“道”的翻译。对于《道德经》原文中的“道”字， Victor Mair 采用的是归化译法，因为在英语世界，大写的 Way 亦即中文的“道” 。美国有人出版了一本用现当代美国流行英语翻译的《圣经》，名字就叫做 The Way, 而不叫 The Bible. 1987年我在美国宾州做交换教师时，有朋友送给我一本，它是我第一个通读的《圣经》版本，同时是我认识到 The Way （道）与 the way （路）之间的异同和隐喻关系（Metaphoricalrelationship）的启蒙读本。其实在汉语中，道与路不也正是这样一种密不可分的关系吗？与 Mair 相反的是， Mitchell 采取了异化译法，但由于《道德经》的知名度遍布全球，这个异化译法丝毫不会影响西洋读者对 Tao 的理解。
（2） Mair 译文第二行的逆翻译中， “name” 和 “named” 本来可以只用一个“名” ，但在汉语中， “名”作为“名望”、“名声”、“名誉”等义项的使用频度似乎和作为名字的“名”的使用频度不相上下甚至更高，因此如果只逆翻译成一个字“名” ，很可能会导致误读。推敲再三，决定舍弃精练而避免误解。
（3）中文里的“玄” ，既表示黑和暗，也表示深奥与玄妙。Mair 译作“mystery” ，肯定是符合《道德经》原文之意趣的。但 Mitchell 译作“darkness” 似也无可厚非，毕竟 darkness 是 mysteries 的最佳的 metaphor.
月光皎洁，普照山河大地;
The moon sheds her silver glory all over the earth, mountains and rivers.
寂寥苍穹，悠远深沉;
Remote and serene is the great dome of heaven.
虚空中，明澈清晰的声音，犹如深谷钟声，
